South Bend, IN – An 18-year-old man has been charged in connection with a South Bend shooting that left an 8-year-old girl hospitalized and injured an adult woman, authorities said Monday.
According to the South Bend Police Department, officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots on the 800 block of Lindenwood Avenue near the Laurel Woods Apartments on August 17, 2025. When officers arrived, they found an adult female and a juvenile female suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Police said the adult victim was treated and released, while the 8-year-old remains hospitalized.
Following an investigation by the department’s Violent Crimes Unit, 18-year-old Tommy Gatheright was identified as a suspect. On Wednesday, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office announced formal charges.
Gatheright faces four felony counts: aiding aggravated battery, aiding battery resulting in serious bodily injury, aiding battery with a deadly weapon, and criminal recklessness.
At the time of charging, officials said Gatheright was already being held at the St. Joseph County Jail on an unrelated matter.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, and police reminded the public that all suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
