Mishawaka, IN – New criminal charges have been filed following a hostage situation in Mishawaka that ended with an officer-involved shooting and left a suspect hospitalized in critical condition.

According to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, charges were formally filed Monday against 53-year-old Chad Bean after a more than four-hour standoff Sunday at a residence on Conner Drive.

Prosecutors allege Bean held five hostages inside the home, prompting a response from the Mishawaka Police Department and the St. Joseph County Metro SWAT Team. All hostages were eventually rescued during the operation.

Bean was wounded by police gunfire during the response, authorities said. Due to that injury, the South Bend Police Department has taken over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting under an established interlocal agreement. Bean remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Court records show Bean now faces eight felony charges, including five counts of criminal confinement (Level 3 felonies), one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon (Level 4 felony), and two counts of stalking, one at the Level 4 felony and another at the Level 6 felony level.

The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit continues to investigate the shooting portion of the case. Once that investigation is complete, findings will be forwarded to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether any additional charges are warranted.

Authorities emphasized that all individuals involved are presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.

Residents near Conner Drive reported a heavy police presence during Sunday’s incident, which drew attention from across St. Joseph County and the South Bend–Mishawaka metro area.
