Fort Gratiot Twp., MI – A 55-year-old man is dead after allegedly taking his own life as deputies attempted to serve a warrant Thursday afternoon, according to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrived just before 12:30 p.m. on the 3200 block of Carrigan Road to arrest the man on a criminal sexual conduct warrant. As officers approached, they heard a single gunshot. Upon entering the residence, deputies found the man with a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were performed but were unsuccessful, officials said.

During a search of the home, deputies discovered what appeared to be a homemade bomb. Law enforcement evacuated nearby homes as a precaution and called in the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad. After investigation, the object was determined to be a realistic prop with no explosives present.

Authorities confirmed the man was the only person inside the residence and that no one else was injured. The Sheriff’s Office thanked the Michigan State Police for assisting in the incident response.
