O’FALLON, IL – Motorists traveling on Interstate 64 through St. Clair County should expect delays starting Friday, Oct. 10, as the Illinois Department of Transportation begins intermittent weekday lane closures between West Highway 50 (Exit 14) and Illinois 158 (Exit 19) for road construction.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), one lane in each direction will remain open throughout the project, which is expected to continue through mid-December 2025, weather permitting.

To reduce congestion, IDOT says lane closures will avoid peak travel times:

  • Eastbound I-64: All lanes open from 6–9 p.m., Monday–Friday.
  • Westbound I-64: All lanes open from 6–9 a.m., Monday–Friday.

The work is part of a $72.45 million improvement project that includes widening, resurfacing, and drainage upgrades along a three-mile stretch of I-64. Major construction is expected to begin later this winter, with advance notice provided as additional impacts are confirmed.

Drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert for workers and signage, and avoid using mobile devices through the construction zone.

The project supports the state’s broader Rebuild Illinois program, which is investing more than $33.2 billion in transportation improvements statewide through 2031.
