Cahokia Heights, IL – Drivers in the Metro East area are being asked to avoid part of Interstate 255 today as emergency crews work to repair a downed powerline.
According to the Illinois State Police, I-255 northbound at Bond Avenue (milepost 16) will be shut down from approximately 12:30 p.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday. The closure is necessary to allow utility workers to safely make repairs.
Traffic in the area is expected to be temporarily affected, particularly for drivers traveling north toward St. Louis. Police did not provide detour details, but motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes until the road reopens.
This closure comes during the midday travel window, when both commuter and commercial traffic use the corridor to connect St. Clair County and surrounding communities. Officials say the roadway should reopen by early afternoon once the hazard is removed.
Motorists are urged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time if heading through Cahokia Heights on I-255. Updates on the closure will be shared through Illinois State Police channels.
