Springfield, IL – Forecasters are tracking a midweek storm system that could bring varying rainfall totals across Illinois, according to the National Weather Service Central Illinois. While most of central and southeast Illinois are expected to see light rain under a half inch, areas south of Interstate 74 may receive up to an inch or more by Wednesday.

Meteorologists say there is significant uncertainty in the storm’s exact track and strength, which could sharply influence where heavier rain develops. Areas from Jacksonville to Olney could see moderate rainfall approaching 2 inches, though many locations will likely end up with less.

Rain chances will increase late Tuesday and continue into Wednesday, with the heaviest precipitation expected along and south of I-70. North of I-74, rainfall may be limited to a few hundredths of an inch or none at all.

The weather service notes this system will likely be followed by cooler and drier conditions heading into late week, as temperatures dip into the 40s and 50s overnight.

Drivers are encouraged to watch for ponding on rural roads and check local forecasts for updates as the storm track becomes clearer.
