Springfield, Mo. – Rain will keep much of southwest Missouri damp Thursday, with high temperatures struggling to climb out of the upper 60s to mid-70s, marking a rare shot at record-low highs for late August.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, showers are most likely across the region Thursday, with rainfall chances near 60% and cooler air dropping lows into the low 60s by night. The unusual chill will be short-lived, however, as a stretch of dry, warmer weather takes hold heading into the Labor Day holiday weekend.
By Friday, sunshine returns with highs rising into the low to mid-80s. Saturday will feel more like summer again, with readings between 79 and 87 degrees, before holding steady in the low- to mid-80s Sunday and Monday. Clear skies and mild nights in the 50s will make for comfortable evenings for outdoor events, barbecues, and travel across southern Missouri.
Drivers should be cautious Thursday, as wet roads may slow evening commutes along I-44, Highway 65, and other heavily traveled corridors. Once storms clear, no significant hazards are expected through Labor Day.
The National Weather Service says conditions will remain dry through early next week, with no new watches or warnings anticipated after Thursday’s rain.
