Springfield, Missouri – Another bitterly cold morning is creating hazardous travel conditions across Springfield as wind chills dip well below freezing, raising concerns for drivers during the early commute. While skies are mostly dry, the intense cold is allowing moisture on roads to refreeze quickly, especially before temperatures recover later this morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, wind chills early today ranged from about 5 degrees below zero to near 10 degrees before 10 a.m. High temperatures will struggle to climb out of the 20s this afternoon, followed by another cold night with lows dropping back into the teens and wind chills between zero and 15 degrees by Tuesday morning.

Roadways including I-44, U.S. 65, and U.S. 60 are most vulnerable to icy patches on bridges, overpasses, and shaded stretches, particularly during the morning and late-night hours. MoDOT crews are monitoring conditions, but the cold can limit how effective road treatments remain. Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra stopping distance, and keep winter safety supplies in their vehicles.

Looking ahead, colder-than-normal temperatures are likely to return again this weekend, with a high chance of below-normal readings across the Ozarks. Additional advisories could be issued if wind chills drop further or travel impacts increase.
