Springfield, Illinois – Severe thunderstorms could rattle parts of central and southeast Illinois late Monday night, bringing intense lightning, heavy rainfall, and strong wind gusts just before midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the storms will move eastward overnight and continue into Tuesday, with a 70% to 90% chance of severe activity in areas like Springfield, Decatur, and Mattoon. A few storms Tuesday afternoon may also reach severe levels. Rain will linger across the region through Thursday, though storm strength and rainfall totals are expected to ease by midweek.

On Tuesday, highs will range from 73°F to 80°F before a notable cool-down. By Wednesday, expect highs in the 60s and lows dipping into the 40s overnight. Cities like Champaign and Bloomington could see slight chance showers Wednesday into Thursday.

Drivers should use caution late Monday and early Tuesday due to reduced visibility and slick roads. Bring outdoor items inside and charge devices in case of brief outages. Evening sports or events may face delays or cancellations.

Drier weather is expected Friday into the weekend, but stay alert — more updates or advisories may follow as storm risks shift eastward.
