Orangeburg County, SC – A Springfield man faces multiple felony drug and weapons charges after deputies discovered large quantities of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and cash during a warrant service this week, authorities said.

According to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), investigators were assisting the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) with a warrant related to alleged animal cruelty when they uncovered a significant stash of illegal narcotics.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said 53-year-old Christopher Corbitt of Springfield was charged with trafficking methamphetamine, trafficking fentanyl, trafficking cocaine, and multiple counts of possessing a weapon during a violent crime. Several charges include trafficking within proximity of a school.

During the Wednesday operation, deputies reported seizing more than a pound of meth, a half-pound of fentanyl, 24 grams of cocaine, oxycodone tablets, two handguns, and over $22,000 in cash.

“The scariest part of this is the amount of fentanyl seized,” Sheriff Ravenell said, noting that even a few milligrams of fentanyl can be fatal, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Authorities said the initial scope of the investigation was animal fighting and ill treatment of animals, but the drug discovery expanded the case.
