Springfield, Missouri – Drivers and residents north of Interstate 44 should brace for isolated severe thunderstorms this afternoon through late evening, with hail up to an inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the severe weather threat is tied to a cold front sweeping across the region. The greatest risk extends from Fort Scott and Nevada to Sedalia and Clinton, where a Level 2 “Slight Risk” has been issued. Areas like Osage Beach, Lebanon, and Rolla are under a Level 1 “Marginal Risk.”

The storms could develop quickly late Wednesday afternoon and intensify into the evening. Hail up to the size of nickels or quarters is the primary concern, while damaging winds may lead to downed tree limbs or power outages, especially along U.S. Route 65 and Highway 54.

Residents in higher-risk zones should secure outdoor items, remain indoors during storms, and monitor local alerts. High-profile vehicles may face dangerous crosswinds on open roadways.

Storm activity is expected to diminish overnight, but the NWS warns that additional advisories may follow if the front lingers or intensifies.
