Springfield, MO – Residents across southwest Missouri should prepare for a stretch of wet and stormy weather from late Wednesday through Friday as a strong system brings widespread rainfall and periods of thunderstorms. Forecasters warn that the heaviest rain is likely Thursday into Thursday night, with localized amounts topping 2 inches.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Springfield, confidence is high that much of the region will receive at least 1 inch of rain, with probability values exceeding 70 to 90 percent across many counties including Greene, Christian, Jasper, Howell, and Douglas. The risk of heavier totals—over 2 inches—is greatest farther southeast, particularly around West Plains, Mountain View, and parts of south-central Missouri.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to move across the area at times beginning late Wednesday night. The most widespread and intense rainfall is forecast during the day Thursday and into Thursday night as the core of the storm system moves overhead. While widespread flooding is not currently anticipated, forecasters caution that heavy downpours could lead to isolated flooding in poor-drainage locations or areas that experience repeated storms.

The unsettled weather may also slow travel, particularly on Highways 60, 65, and I-44, where reduced visibility and ponding of water on roadways could develop. Outdoor activities and holiday travel plans may be affected as well, with storms lingering into portions of Friday.

NWS officials advise residents to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared for changing conditions, especially during the Thursday-evening commute when the heaviest rainfall is expected.
