Springfield, MO – Forecasters are warning of a slick and potentially hazardous Thursday across portions of southwest and central Missouri as both freezing fog and a light rain-snow mix affect travel through the day.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect for portions of the Eastern Ozarks until 9 a.m. Thursday. The agency warns that ice may form on untreated and elevated surfaces, including bridges and overpasses, making roads slippery for the morning commute. Visibility could also drop below one mile in spots, prompting drivers to slow down and use low-beam headlights.
Later in the day, attention turns to a band of light rain and snow expected to develop across central Missouri between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. Forecasters give the event a 15–30% chance of occurring, noting that even limited precipitation could produce slick travel conditions where temperatures hover near freezing.
While snowfall accumulations are expected to remain light, any band of precipitation could lead to localized icing and slippery conditions, particularly in areas north and east of Springfield and along Highway 65 and Interstate 44.
Motorists traveling this afternoon and evening are urged to use caution, allow extra braking distance, and monitor updated forecasts as the system develops.
Quiet but cold weather will follow into Friday, with morning lows in the 20s and daytime highs in the upper 30s to low 40s. No additional wintry weather is expected through the weekend.
