Springfield, MO – A thick layer of fog blanketed the Ozarks early Saturday, turning headlights into hazy halos and reducing visibility across highways and open valleys. The National Weather Service in Springfield has issued a Dense Fog Advisory in effect until 10 a.m. CST, warning that travel could be hazardous in areas where visibility falls to one-quarter mile or less.

Fog developed overnight under calm winds and moist air, and some areas—particularly along Highways 60 and 65—may experience patchy freezing fog where pavement temperatures hover near freezing. Elevated surfaces, including bridges and overpasses, could become slick, creating a risk for early-morning commuters.

Motorists are urged to use low-beam headlights, allow extra braking distance, and avoid sudden lane changes until the fog begins to lift midmorning. As the sun breaks through later today, temperatures will rise toward 50°F, bringing clearer, milder conditions for the afternoon.

Sunday brings another partly cloudy day with highs in the low 40s, followed by a cooler start to next week as lows dip into the 20s. Early December patterns remain stable for now, but long-range models hint that colder air and possible snow systems could return to the central U.S. between Dec. 11–17—just as early holiday travel begins.

Five-Day Outlook for Springfield:

  • Saturday: Dense fog early, clearing. High 50°F.
  • Sunday: Mostly cloudy, high 42°F.
  • Monday: Sunny, high 42°F.
  • Tuesday: Sunny and warmer, high 54°F.
  • Wednesday: Partly cloudy, high 45°F.
