Springfield, MO – Residents across western Missouri and southeast Kansas are being warned to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding today, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Springfield.

The heaviest rain is expected to begin Tuesday morning, September 23, and continue through early Wednesday. Forecast models show the strongest storms and greatest rainfall totals developing Tuesday, with additional showers possible Wednesday afternoon.

According to the NWS, areas including Springfield, Joplin, Bolivar, Pittsburg (KS), and surrounding communities face a high probability of storms through the day. Rain chances exceed 70% across much of the region, with some locations seeing an 80–90% likelihood of precipitation by Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The greatest risk for flash flooding is expected Tuesday, when multiple rounds of storms could bring heavy downpours in a short period of time. The NWS also warns that severe storms are most likely during the morning and afternoon hours, increasing the threat of damaging winds, hail, and localized flooding.

Motorists are urged to use caution during commutes and avoid driving through flooded roadways. Residents in low-lying or flood-prone areas should remain alert to changing conditions.
