Springfield, Missouri – Elevated fire danger is expected to develop late Thursday morning into the afternoon across portions of the Ozarks.

According to the US National Weather Service in Springfield, a dry air mass combined with increasing southerly winds will create conditions supportive of rapid fire spread. The strongest winds are forecast from late morning through early afternoon, before weakening later in the day.

Officials warn that fires can spread quickly under these conditions, particularly in open fields, grassy areas and locations with dormant winter vegetation. Areas along US-65 near Springfield and Branson, I-44 between Joplin and Rolla and US-63 near West Plains may experience breezy and dry conditions favorable for fire growth.

Outdoor burning is discouraged except for experienced fire personnel. Residents are urged to avoid activities that could create sparks or open flames, including debris burning. Proper disposal of cigarettes and avoiding parking vehicles on dry grass are also recommended.

Temperatures Thursday are expected to reach the mid-50s to mid-60s, with above-normal readings continuing into the weekend. Rain chances will increase Friday evening and persist into early Sunday, which may help reduce fire concerns.

Looking ahead, forecasters indicate a strong signal for above-average temperatures next week, with highs potentially reaching the 70s across parts of southern Missouri.

Residents, including rural landowners and those working outdoors, should remain alert to changing fire conditions Thursday afternoon.
