Springfield, Missouri – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt Friday afternoon and race across southwest and central Missouri by evening, with wind gusts up to 60 mph threatening drivers along I-44 and US-65 before sunset. Anyone with outdoor plans should finalize safety preparations by midday Friday as storms could intensify quickly.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, thunderstorms will develop Friday afternoon and may become supercells capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes. Storms are expected to merge into a squall line Friday night, increasing the risk for widespread wind damage across the region. All hazards remain possible, including hail up to quarter size or larger and localized flash flooding.
Communities from Joplin to Springfield and east toward Lebanon sit in an area with the highest potential for severe weather. I-49 near Joplin and I-44 between Springfield and Rolla could see sudden drops in visibility during heavy rain and hail. Farther south, Branson and West Plains may experience intense wind bursts capable of downing tree limbs and causing scattered power outages Friday evening.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and identify a sturdy shelter location away from windows. If a Tornado Warning is issued, move immediately to an interior room on the lowest floor. Avoid driving through water-covered roadways, especially near low-water crossings.
Storms should shift east late Friday night, but additional watches or warnings may be issued as the system evolves through the evening hours.
