Springfield, Missouri – Another Arctic air mass is expected to move into the Ozarks beginning Friday, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills that could drop into the single digits and below zero through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the coldest conditions are forecast Friday night into early Saturday morning, when minimum wind chills between -5 and -15 degrees are possible across much of southwest Missouri. These values are expected as cold air combines with light winds, creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors for extended periods.

Daytime temperatures Friday and Saturday are forecast to remain well below normal, with highs generally in the upper teens to lower 20s, while overnight lows fall into the single digits. The cold will persist into Sunday morning before a gradual warming trend begins early next week.

The NWS warns that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions. Residents traveling along major corridors such as Interstate 44, U.S. Highway 65, and U.S. Route 60 should be prepared for bitter cold during overnight and early morning hours, especially if stranded or dealing with vehicle issues.

A slight chance (15–30 percent) of light snow is possible Thursday night, though little to no accumulation is expected. Even so, the combination of cold air and any untreated surfaces could lead to slick spots.

Officials urge residents to take protective actions, including bringing pets indoors, covering exposed skin, protecting sensitive plants, and preventing frozen pipes by allowing indoor faucets to drip.

This cold outbreak is especially impactful for commuters, outdoor workers, students, and vulnerable populations across the region.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service as the Arctic air settles in.
