Springfield, Missouri – A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today across much of southwest Missouri as gusty winds and low humidity create critical fire weather conditions.

According to the US National Weather Service in Springfield, maximum wind gusts are expected to range from 30 to 45 mph, with minimum relative humidity values between 20 and 30 percent. These conditions can allow fires to spread rapidly if ignition occurs.

The warning includes communities along and south of Interstate 44, including Springfield, Joplin, Lebanon, Branson, and West Plains. Travel corridors such as US-65, I-44, and US-63 may experience blowing dust and increased fire danger in open areas.

Officials warn that outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could create sparks or open flames. Proper disposal of cigarettes and avoiding parking vehicles on dry grass are also recommended.

In addition to fire concerns, above-average temperatures are expected to continue through the week. Highs Tuesday are forecast between 58 and 65 degrees, with even warmer conditions possible by Friday and Saturday.

A slight chance of rain, between 30 and 60 percent, is forecast Wednesday night, though rainfall totals are expected to remain light, generally around one-tenth of an inch or less.

The combination of strong winds and dry conditions may impact outdoor workers, agricultural operations, and motorists traveling through exposed areas during the afternoon hours.

Officials urge residents to remain alert and report any signs of wildfire immediately.
