Springfield, Missouri – Rain changing to snow Sunday evening could lead to slick roads and hazardous travel overnight across southwest Missouri.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, colder air moving in behind a cold front is expected to quickly drop temperatures Sunday night, allowing rain to transition into light to moderate snowfall across parts of the region.

Forecasters say at least 1 inch of snow is possible in portions of southwest and central Missouri as precipitation changes over Sunday evening and overnight.

Officials warn that rapidly falling temperatures could cause a flash freeze, allowing moisture on roads and sidewalks to quickly freeze. This could create slick travel conditions by late Sunday night into early Monday.

Wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph may also lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility, particularly in open areas.

The National Weather Service says even light snow combined with falling temperatures could produce minor road impacts, especially on untreated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and prepare for changing weather conditions from severe storms earlier Sunday to wintry weather overnight.

The overnight timing could affect late-night drivers, early Monday commuters, and students traveling to school Monday morning across the region.
