Springfield, Mo. – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across much of Missouri this afternoon, with the most active weather likely along and south of Interstate 44. Temperatures will climb into the upper 80s to low 90s before storms move in, bringing the potential for lightning and pockets of heavy rain in areas hit by repeated rounds of showers.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, storm chances will peak later this afternoon and early evening, with a 20% to 40% chance of rain for most areas. The most intense cells could produce dangerous lightning strikes and brief, localized flooding, particularly in low-lying spots.

Drivers along I-44 should remain alert for sudden downpours and reduced visibility, especially during the evening commute. Outdoor activities should be monitored closely, and anyone caught outside should seek shelter when thunder is heard.

Overnight, temperatures will cool into the mid-to-upper 60s, with only a slight 10% to 30% chance of lingering showers. Most areas will remain dry after midnight, though clouds will stick around.

Storm chances continue through the week, with more widespread activity possible by Thursday.
