Springfield, Missouri – Drivers across Missouri and eastern Kansas are bracing for a major winter storm expected to bring widespread heavy snow and near-impossible travel conditions through Sunday evening. Snow will rapidly intensify Friday night, creating slick roads and reduced visibility during the evening commute and worsening overnight.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for much of Missouri and portions of eastern Kansas, with snow beginning as early as Friday evening in southwest Missouri and spreading north overnight. Central and southern Missouri, including Springfield, Lebanon, Rolla, and West Plains, could see between 8 and 13 inches of snow before the storm winds down Sunday. Farther north, including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Sedalia, and surrounding counties, totals of 5 to 8 inches are expected.

MoDOT crews are preparing for extended plowing operations, but officials warn that snow rates could outpace treatment at times, especially late Friday night into Saturday. Major routes including I-44, U.S. 60, and U.S. 65 may become snow-packed and hazardous. Travel is strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary.

Residents are urged to complete errands early, charge devices, and keep emergency kits in vehicles. Road conditions can be checked at traveler.modot.org. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through Sunday evening, and additional advisories are possible as the storm evolves.
