Springfield, Illinois – Drivers and utility crews across central and eastern Illinois are bracing for a narrow but potent window of severe storms expected to hit between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. tonight, with wind gusts topping 60 mph capable of downing tree limbs and knocking out power in localized areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, the strongest storms will track southeast of a Taylorville-to-Hoopeston line, where conditions support isolated severe cells. Wind remains the primary threat, but forecasters note a low, 2% tornado risk and hail up to golf ball size in the most intense storms.

Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, and Danville sit near or just inside the higher-risk corridor. Along Interstate 72 and I-74, sudden wind bursts could reduce visibility and push high-profile vehicles off course during the evening commute. Rural counties may see brief but intense impacts, especially where storms pulse quickly.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items before 6 p.m., charge devices in case of outages, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours. If thunder is heard, move indoors immediately and stay away from windows.

Storm activity is expected to weaken after 10 p.m., but additional updates or warnings could be issued if storm intensity increases before sunset.
