Springfield, Illinois – Air conditioners may run full blast Thursday afternoon as temperatures surge toward 90 degrees across central Illinois, but that summer-like heat will vanish within hours as a sharp overnight cooldown drops readings into the 30s by Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, highs between 85 and 90 degrees are expected Thursday, challenging or breaking daily records in cities including Springfield, Decatur, Peoria, and Champaign. Some locations could come within a few degrees of all-time March records, highlighting the intensity of this early-season heat spike.
The warmth will be short-lived. A cold front moving through late Thursday night will drive temperatures down rapidly, creating a swing of nearly 50 degrees in less than 24 hours. By early Friday, much of the region will wake up to lows in the 30s, a sharp contrast that could impact early commuters and outdoor plans.
Major corridors including I-55, I-72, and I-74 will see dry conditions Thursday, but residents should prepare for the abrupt temperature drop by evening. Sensitive plants and early blooms could be at risk if colder pockets dip further overnight.
Residents are urged to stay hydrated during peak afternoon heat, then prepare for the quick return to colder air by late night. Additional advisories may be issued if record temperatures are officially tied or broken Thursday evening.
