Springfield, Ill. – Cooler air is moving across Illinois today, leaving much of the region breezy and unsettled as a cold front pushes through. A few spotty showers may trail the front, but most communities are expected to remain dry, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.

Forecasters say temperatures will stay below normal through the weekend, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s during the day and nighttime lows dipping into the 40s. Saturday and Sunday should be dry across Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington, and Peoria, giving residents a break from rain.

Travelers heading out for Friday evening football games or weekend events should prepare for cool, breezy conditions. Light jackets are recommended after sunset, when temperatures fall quickly into the 40s. Those spending extended time outdoors should also be mindful of gusty winds that may make it feel colder than the actual air temperature.

Looking ahead, a steady warm-up begins Monday, with highs in the mid-70s. By Tuesday, most of central Illinois could climb into the upper 70s and even touch 80 degrees, bringing back a more seasonal feel for early September.
