SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Central Illinois will wrap up a warm and mainly dry week before an autumn storm system brings rain and thunderstorms late Friday into Saturday, followed by a sharp drop in temperatures and gusty northwest winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a weak disturbance could spark a few sprinkles north of I-74 this morning, but most areas will stay dry through Thursday. Afternoon highs will climb into the upper 70s with light southwest winds and partly sunny skies, extending the region’s stretch of mild October weather.
By Friday evening, a stronger cold front will sweep across the state, triggering scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. Some brief downpours and gusty winds are possible as the front moves through overnight. The NWS expects cooler, drier air to settle in Saturday, with highs only in the low to mid-70s and temperatures dropping into the 40s by Sunday morning.
Sunday will feature a brisk, sunny fall feel with stiff northwest winds up to 25 mph. Travelers should be prepared for wet roads Friday night and blustery conditions through the weekend, especially along I-55 and I-72.
