Springfield, Ill. – Central Illinois is bracing for its coldest stretch of the fall season, with widespread frost expected tonight and an even colder night on tap for Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory for much of the region as temperatures dip into the low to mid-30s, threatening unprotected plants and gardens.
According to the National Weather Service office in Lincoln, skies will remain clear and winds light tonight, creating ideal conditions for frost development from Peoria to Effingham. Lows are forecast to drop as cold as 33°F in rural valleys. A stronger chill Thursday night could bring readings near or below freezing, producing a hard frost for many communities before temperatures slowly rebound over the weekend.
Dry weather will dominate through Saturday, with highs hovering near 60°F under mostly sunny skies. A weak system will approach Saturday night, bringing a small chance of light rain showers that may linger into Sunday morning.
Residents are urged to cover or bring in tender plants, disconnect garden hoses, and protect outdoor plumbing from the early-season cold. Despite the frosty start, a mild and pleasant weekend finish is expected as sunshine returns Sunday afternoon.
