Springfield, Ill. – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across Central Illinois tonight as a cold front pushes through the region, bringing a noticeable shift in temperatures and wind direction.

According to the US National Weather Service in Central Illinois, storms could begin as early as this evening, with overnight lows dropping into the mid-40s to upper 50s. By Thursday morning, winds will shift to the northwest and skies will clear as a cooler air mass settles in. Highs Thursday and Friday will remain in the low to mid-70s — a significant dip from recent humid conditions.

Another weak front may trigger additional light showers Friday night, mainly along and south of Interstate 70. Cities like Effingham, Vandalia, and Salem could see spotty rain into early Saturday.

Drivers should use caution during tonight’s storms, especially during the evening commute. Be prepared for brief downpours, gusty winds, and wet roads. Cooler overnight temperatures — dipping as low as the mid-40s — may also prompt residents to bring out light jackets or adjust thermostats.

Cooler, mostly sunny conditions are expected to persist into the weekend. Additional weather statements may be issued if Friday night’s rain strengthens.
