Springfield, Illinois – Periods of light snow are expected to impact central Illinois this afternoon and evening, creating slick travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, snow will spread west to east across the region later today, lingering into the evening hours. Most locations are forecast to receive a dusting to around one-half inch of snow, with only a low chance (less than 20%) of amounts exceeding one inch, mainly north of Interstate 70.

While snowfall totals are expected to remain light, forecasters emphasized that slick roadways will be the primary impact, particularly on untreated surfaces. Travel corridors including Interstate 55, Interstate 74, Interstate 57, Interstate 39, and U.S. Highway 36 may develop slippery spots as snow accumulates during peak travel times.

Probability guidance shows a moderate to high chance of at least a dusting of snow across much of the region, including Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, and Danville. Snowfall rates are expected to be light, but colder pavement temperatures could allow accumulation even with minimal snowfall.

The National Weather Service said snow is likely to linger into the evening hours, gradually tapering later tonight. No significant blowing snow or visibility reductions were highlighted, but brief visibility drops may occur during periods of steadier snow.

Drivers traveling this afternoon and evening are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Officials also recommend letting someone know travel plans when heading out during winter conditions.

Students, commuters, and young workers traveling along major central Illinois routes may encounter changing road conditions, especially after sunset when temperatures cool further.

No winter weather advisories were issued with this update, but the National Weather Service noted that even light snow can lead to travel hazards when road temperatures are cold.

Additional updates will be issued if snowfall timing or impacts change.
