Springfield, Illinois – Mild temperatures across central Illinois on Friday are expected to give way to cooler conditions this weekend, with light rain returning late tonight and continuing through Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, Friday will be breezy with west to northwest wind gusts reaching up to 35 miles per hour at times through the afternoon. Daytime highs are forecast to range from 45 to 55 degrees, well above normal for early January.
Rain chances are expected to increase late tonight as another system moves into the region. Forecasters said light rain is likely overnight, with precipitation continuing into Saturday. As temperatures cool, rain may transition to a rain-and-snow mix, particularly north of Interstate 72. No significant snow accumulation is expected at this time.
Saturday will be noticeably cooler, with highs falling into the mid-30s to mid-40s. Overnight lows are forecast to dip into the low to mid-20s. Winds are expected to remain breezy, which may add to the chilly feel, especially during the morning hours.
By Sunday, temperatures are expected to remain cool, with highs in the 30 to 35 degree range, followed by a gradual warming trend early next week. Highs are forecast to rebound into the 40s and 50s by Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
While no hazardous winter weather is currently anticipated, residents should remain aware of changing conditions late tonight and Saturday, particularly during periods of precipitation. Wet roads and brief slick spots are possible if rain mixes with snow.
Commuters, students, and weekend travelers should allow extra time and monitor forecast updates as the timing and type of precipitation may change.
