Springfield, Illinois – Widespread rain spreading south of I-72 this evening could bring over 1 inch of rainfall, increasing ponding risks along Interstate 72 and nearby roadways overnight.

According to the US National Weather Service in Lincoln, a storm system will expand rain northeastward across central Illinois this afternoon, becoming widespread from around I-72 southward by evening. Rain is expected to continue overnight before tapering from west to east Sunday morning.

Forecast rainfall totals may exceed 1 inch in areas along and south of I-72, including Springfield, Jacksonville, Decatur, and Effingham. Locations farther north toward I-74 may see lighter amounts.

Forecasters note that frozen soil conditions remain in place north of Interstate 70. The combination of frozen ground and heavy rainfall could limit absorption, leading to ponding of water in urban and low-lying areas. Swollen ditches and rising water levels in rivers and streams are also possible.

Drivers along Interstate 72, Interstate 55, and Interstate 70 may encounter water-covered pavement or reduced visibility during periods of steadier rain tonight. While widespread flooding is not currently forecast, localized nuisance flooding may develop where drainage is poor.

Rainfall chances decrease Sunday morning as the system exits the region, though runoff impacts may linger in some communities.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local river forecasts and avoid driving through water-covered roadways.
