Springfield, Ill. – Central Illinois faces a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat and humidity from this weekend into early next week, with heat index values climbing between 105 and 110 degrees across much of the region. The National Weather Service warns that the conditions could become hazardous, particularly for those without reliable access to air conditioning.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, peak heat index values will reach or exceed 105 degrees in cities including Bloomington, Champaign, Peoria, and Springfield through Monday. The combination of high temperatures and oppressive humidity will make outdoor activity risky, especially during mid- to late-afternoon hours.

Residents are urged to limit strenuous outdoor work, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, and stay hydrated. Those most vulnerable include children, older adults, and people with underlying health conditions. Public cooling centers may be available in several cities, and residents should check local resources for locations.

The intense heat is expected to ease slightly after Monday, but forecasters note that more advisories could follow if humidity levels remain high.
