Springfield, Illinois – Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop by late Thursday morning, with damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes possible along the Interstate 55 corridor from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered severe storms are forecast mainly during the afternoon and early evening hours Thursday. The highest risk zone sits southeast of I-55, including communities such as Decatur, Champaign, Effingham and areas along Interstate 57 and Interstate 74. Storm chances range from 60 to 80 percent, with some cells becoming severe.
Primary threats include wind gusts exceeding 60 mph and a few isolated tornadoes. Large hail is also possible in stronger storms. Cities along I-72 near Springfield and Decatur could see rapid storm development early in the afternoon, with activity shifting east toward Champaign and Danville by late day.
Motorists traveling on I-55, I-57 and I-74 should prepare for sudden visibility drops, ponding on roadways and strong crosswinds. Outdoor plans may need adjustment as storms could intensify quickly.
Residents are urged to stay weather aware, have multiple ways to receive warnings and be ready to take shelter if a warning is issued. The severe threat is expected to diminish after sunset as storms move east of the region, but additional updates are likely as confidence increases in storm timing and intensity
