Springfield, Illinois — A noticeable warming trend is expected across central Illinois through the end of the workweek, bringing milder temperatures and breezy conditions before cooler weather returns this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, temperatures will gradually rise Wednesday through Friday, with highs reaching the upper 30s to mid-40s in many locations. Thursday and Friday are expected to be the warmest days, with several communities climbing to 40 degrees or higher for the first time in days.
Wednesday will remain on the cooler side, with highs in the mid-20s to near 30 degrees, but conditions begin improving Thursday as southwest winds usher in warmer air. By Friday, highs are forecast to reach 38 to 46 degrees, especially along major corridors such as Interstate 55, Interstate 74, Interstate 72, and Interstate 39.
The warmer temperatures will be accompanied by breezy conditions, particularly Thursday afternoon into Friday. Southwest winds are expected to shift northwest by Friday morning, with gusts ranging from 20 to 25 mph. These winds could impact high-profile vehicles on open stretches of roadway and make outdoor conditions feel cooler than temperatures suggest.
Saturday will bring a return to cooler weather, with highs dropping back into the upper 20s to upper 30s, followed by slightly milder conditions Sunday with highs in the low to mid-40s. Overnight lows through the weekend will remain cold, generally in the teens to mid-20s.
No precipitation is expected through the weekend, providing dry travel conditions. However, the next chance for rain is forecast Tuesday night into Wednesday of next week, according to long-range outlooks.
For commuters, students, and outdoor workers, the most noticeable changes will be the Friday warmup paired with gusty winds. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts at weather.gov/ilx as wind timing and temperatures are refined.
