Lincoln, Illinois – Gusty south winds up to 40 mph and scattered showers will move across central Illinois tonight, with severe thunderstorms possible Thursday and a chance of snow this weekend.
According to the US National Weather Service in Central Illinois, showers will develop overnight with south winds increasing and gusting as high as 40 mph. Low temperatures are expected to range from the upper 40s to lower 50s, remaining well above seasonal averages.
Forecasters said thunderstorms, some possibly severe, could develop Thursday into Thursday evening as temperatures climb into the mid to upper 60s. The primary threats will depend on storm development, but strong wind gusts are possible along major corridors including Interstate 55, Interstate 74 and Interstate 57.
Unseasonably warm conditions will continue through Thursday before temperatures return closer to normal by Friday. Highs Friday are expected in the mid-40s to near 50 degrees.
By Saturday, a slight chance of rain and snow is forecast across central Illinois as colder air filters into the region. While significant accumulation is not currently expected, changing temperatures could bring brief wintry conditions, especially during nighttime hours.
Drivers along I-55, I-74, US-51 and I-57 should monitor forecasts for potential weather-related travel impacts late this week.
The shifting pattern may affect weekend travel plans for families and students returning to school activities.
Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware and monitor updates as the system evolves.
