Springfield, Illinois – Southwest winds gusting up to 35 mph could push any spark out of control within minutes Friday afternoon, especially along I-55 and I-72 where dry fields sit close to roadways. With humidity dropping near 30 percent, central Illinois faces an elevated fire risk that could quickly threaten drivers and nearby communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, windy and mild conditions will combine with ongoing drought to create heightened fire danger through Friday evening. Sustained southwest winds between 25 and 35 mph are expected during the peak heating hours, increasing the chance that small grass fires spread rapidly.

Communities from Peoria and Bloomington south to Springfield, Decatur and Champaign sit in the corridor of greatest concern. Along I-74, I-55 and I-57, dry roadside vegetation could ignite from discarded cigarettes, dragging trailer chains or farm equipment. Fire departments may face fast-moving field fires capable of jumping rural roads under strong gusts.

Officials urge residents to avoid open burning and postpone debris fires. Farmers should use caution with machinery that can throw sparks, and drivers should never toss cigarettes from vehicles. Secure trailer chains and check tire pressure to reduce blowout risks that could ignite grass along highways.

While no widespread red flag warning is in effect as of Friday morning, conditions will remain primed for rapid fire growth until winds ease near sunset. Additional statements or local burn restrictions could be issued if fires develop during the afternoon hours.
