Springfield, IL – Seasonably cold temperatures will continue across central Illinois through the weekend before a warming trend pushes highs into the 50s early next week, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.

Forecasters say daytime highs will remain in the upper 20s to 30s through Sunday, with dry weather expected through at least early next week. Overnight lows will be colder, dropping into the upper teens and lower 20s tonight and Saturday night, raising the potential for refreeze on untreated roads and sidewalks.

Saturday is expected to be partly cloudy, with highs ranging from the lower to upper 30s. Similar conditions are forecast Sunday, with highs generally in the mid to upper 30s across much of the region. Skies will remain partly cloudy, and no precipitation is expected.

A noticeable shift begins Monday as warmer air moves into the Midwest. Highs are forecast to rebound into the upper 40s and low 50s, followed by a stronger warm-up on Tuesday when many locations could see afternoon temperatures reaching the low to upper 50s. Overnight lows will also moderate, rising into the 30s and lower 40s by early next week.

The National Weather Service noted that the warming trend will make conditions feel more like early spring than early January, especially compared to the cold start to the weekend. Dry weather is expected to continue during the warm-up, limiting concerns for wintry precipitation.

While no hazardous weather is currently anticipated, motorists and pedestrians should remain cautious during the next two nights, as cold temperatures could lead to icy patches during early morning hours.

Commuters, students, and outdoor workers may notice the biggest temperature changes early next week, particularly Tuesday, when lighter jackets may replace winter gear for afternoon activities.
