Springfield, IL – Snow will continue across central and southeast Illinois late this afternoon into the evening, creating slick travel conditions for drivers across the region, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln. Most areas are expected to receive 2 to 4 inches, with the highest totals of 3 to 4 inches likely along and near Interstate 72.
Forecasters report that snow began earlier today and will spread east toward eastern Illinois by late afternoon. According to the NWS, snowfall rates may increase during the early evening, coinciding with the busy commute and reducing visibility at times.
Communities including Springfield, Decatur, Jacksonville, Bloomington, Lincoln, and Mattoon fall within the 2–4 inch range, while lighter totals are possible farther south near Effingham and Edwardsville.
Snow-covered and slippery roads are expected during the Monday evening commute, and travel difficulties may persist into Tuesday morning as temperatures remain below freezing overnight. Drivers should allow extra time, slow down, and increase following distance on all major highways, including I-55, I-72, and Route 51.
The heaviest impacts are forecast from 3 PM to 9 PM today, tapering overnight as the snow gradually ends. The NWS urges motorists to stay alert to changing conditions, especially on bridges, overpasses, and rural roadways where snow may accumulate more quickly.
