Springfield, Illinois — A brief midweek warm-up in central Illinois will give way to another round of bitter cold by this weekend, continuing an active stretch of winter weather across the Springfield area.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Lincoln, temperatures will fluctuate between cold and very cold over the next week, with a short-lived warming trend Wednesday before colder air returns. Highs Wednesday are expected to reach 34–44°F, followed by 26–36°F Thursday.

Forecast guidance shows light snow showers possible tonight and again through Thursday, with 20–40% chances north of Interstate 72. Accumulations, if any, are expected to remain light, but brief slick spots are possible during snow showers.

A stronger push of Arctic air is expected to arrive late Friday into Saturday. High temperatures Saturday are forecast to range from 9–16°F, with overnight lows dropping to near 1°F or below. Bitter cold is expected to persist into early next week, with Sunday highs near 15–22°F and Monday highs in the upper teens to lower 20s.

The National Weather Service says this pattern reflects repeated surges of Arctic air, keeping temperatures well below normal for late January despite short warm-ups in between.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates, use caution during periods of light snow, and prepare for renewed cold heading into the weekend.

The temperature swings could affect commuters and students, especially during early morning travel later this week.
