Springfield, Illinois — A mix of rain and snow may affect parts of central Illinois on New Year’s Eve, particularly near and north of Interstate 74, before drier and colder conditions settle in for New Year’s Day.

According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, light rain and snow showers are possible this afternoon, mainly along and north of the I-74 corridor, including areas near Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Galesburg, and Champaign. As temperatures cool this evening, precipitation may transition to sprinkles and flurries across much of the region.

Roadways that could see brief slick spots include I-74, I-72, I-55, US-51, and US-136, especially on bridges and elevated surfaces during the evening hours. Widespread accumulation is not expected, but localized slick travel remains possible during peak New Year’s Eve travel.

Daytime highs Wednesday are forecast between 34 and 39 degrees, with New Year’s Eve night lows dropping to 12–22 degrees as colder air moves in. Any lingering moisture on roadways could refreeze overnight.

For New Year’s Day (Thursday), conditions turn dry and seasonably cool, with highs ranging from 25 to 34 degrees under mostly sunny skies. No weather advisories are currently in effect for Thursday.

The National Weather Service advises drivers traveling New Year’s Eve to remain alert for changing conditions near I-74, reduce speed if encountering slick spots, and allow extra time for evening travel.
