Springfield, Illinois – Light accumulating snow is expected to move into Springfield after 7 p.m. tonight, creating slippery travel conditions overnight and into the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois, snow will first arrive in western parts of the region this evening before spreading east across central Illinois. In Springfield, minor snow accumulations are expected, generally around 1 inch, with localized amounts approaching 2 inches possible by early Friday.
Forecasters warn that even light snowfall may lead to reduced visibility and slick roadways, especially on interstates, city streets, bridges, and untreated surfaces. Snow is expected to continue through the overnight hours before tapering off Friday morning.
The most hazardous travel window is expected late this evening through mid-morning Friday, when snow-covered roads may impact overnight drivers and early commuters. Drivers should also plan time to clear snow from vehicles before heading out Friday morning.
Temperatures will remain cold enough for snow to stick, increasing the likelihood of slippery conditions despite relatively low snowfall totals.
Residents are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Those traveling this evening or early Friday should be prepared for winter driving conditions.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Friday as snowfall exits the area.
