Springfield, Illinois – Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible across Springfield this afternoon and evening as a line of storms sweeps east-northeast through central Illinois.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Illinois, the Storm Prediction Center has placed the Springfield area under a Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk. This indicates isolated severe storms are possible, primarily during the late afternoon and evening hours.
Forecasters say the line of thunderstorms is expected to develop to the southwest and move across the region. Timing for the Springfield area is generally between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., with earlier activity possible west of Interstate 55.
The primary threat is locally damaging wind gusts. A secondary threat includes a couple of brief, isolated tornadoes embedded within the line of storms. Storm intensity may vary, but any stronger storm could produce sudden hazardous conditions.
Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, be prepared to move indoors quickly if warnings are issued, and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather alerts through the evening.
