Springfield, IL – The Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) is reminding Medicare beneficiaries that free, unbiased help is available to navigate this year’s Medicare Open Enrollment period, which runs from October 15 through December 7, 2025.

According to the Department, individuals can contact the Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to receive one-on-one counseling to compare health and prescription drug plans and ensure their coverage meets their needs for 2026.

“Your health needs can change from year to year, and so do Medicare plan costs and coverage,” said SHIP Director Sandy Leith. “Now’s the time to review your plan to make sure it still works for you.”

SHIP counselors, available in person and online, are trained volunteers offering free and confidential guidance to Medicare-eligible individuals, their families, and caregivers. Officials note that 2026 will see fewer drug plan options and some premium increases—though four drug plans will have $0 premiums.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to carefully read letters from their current insurance providers outlining any coverage changes for 2026 and to confirm plan renewals before the Dec. 7 deadline.

To find a local SHIP site or speak with a counselor, visit ilaging.illinois.gov or call the Senior HelpLine at 1-800-252-8966 (Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.). Medicare plan comparisons are also available through 1-800-MEDICARE or online at Medicare.gov.
