Springfield, IL — Bitter Arctic cold and the potential for weekend snowfall are expected to impact Springfield beginning Friday, with dangerous wind chills and prolonged freezing temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service Central Illinois office, a series of cold fronts will usher in an Arctic air mass by Friday morning, causing wind chills to drop between 10 and 30 degrees below zero, with the coldest values north of Interstate 74. Springfield is expected to see sub-zero wind chills Friday through the weekend, especially during overnight and early morning hours.

Forecasters also indicate that measurable snow is possible Saturday into Sunday, particularly across central and southeastern Illinois. The highest snow accumulation potential—up to 1 to 7 inches—lies south of I-70, where a Winter Storm Watch has been issued. While Springfield sits near the northern edge of the snow risk, even lighter accumulations could create slick roads due to persistent cold.

Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing through at least the first half of next week, meaning snow and ice may linger on untreated roads and sidewalks. The National Weather Service warned that prolonged cold increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, especially during extended outdoor exposure.

Wind chills in Springfield may reach -15° to -25° at times, with overnight lows falling into the single digits or below zero. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes or less under these conditions.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers including hats and gloves, bring pets indoors, and prepare homes and vehicles for extreme cold. Drivers should use caution if snow develops over the weekend.

Springfield residents should continue monitoring forecast updates through Friday and the weekend, as snowfall placement and cold severity may be refined.
