New Mexico is set for a dangerous weather shift Tuesday, with high winds up to 75 mph and critical fire conditions affecting much of the state. The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch and a Fire Weather Watch for Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and surrounding areas as strong gusts and dry conditions increase wildfire risks.
According to the National Weather Service, winds will range from 40 to 50 mph, with gusts reaching 75 mph in some areas. Blowing dust could make travel hazardous along Interstate 25 and other major roadways, while downed trees and power outages are possible. Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects and avoid unnecessary travel, especially for high-profile vehicles.
The Fire Weather Watch warns of humidity levels dropping to 10-20%, creating prime conditions for wildfires. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and officials urge residents to remain vigilant. Any fires that develop could spread rapidly due to the dry and windy conditions.
Five-Day Forecast for Albuquerque
• Tuesday: High of 64°F, sunny but windy with blowing dust.
• Wednesday: Clear skies, high of 57°F, wind decreasing.
• Thursday: Sunny, high near 66°F as spring officially begins.
• Friday: Mostly sunny, high of 65°F.
• Saturday: Partly cloudy, high of 73°F.
New Mexicans should prepare for extreme conditions Tuesday, but a calmer, warmer trend is on the way as spring begins Thursday.
