Des Moines, IA – Spring storms return to Iowa on Thursday, bringing a messy morning commute and scattered thunderstorms to Des Moines and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service, rain and thunderstorms are likely starting around 7 a.m. Thursday, with a 60% chance of precipitation throughout the day. Commuters along I-235 and Highway 69 should prepare for slower travel and reduced visibility. Gusty winds and wet pavement may also impact safety. South winds will increase to 8 to 10 mph by afternoon.

The storms are expected to continue through Thursday evening with a 50% chance of rain lingering into the night. Although rainfall totals should stay under half an inch, localized downpours and thunder could affect outdoor plans. Lightning may also pose a hazard.

Friday will bring a warm-up with highs near 80°F and breezy conditions, but not without lingering showers early in the day. Saturday returns to cooler temperatures with more rain expected—up to 70% chance of precipitation—with highs dipping to the low 70s. Showers likely persist into Saturday night, keeping roads wet into the weekend.

Sunday dries out slightly with a high near 58°F and a 50% chance of rain. Monday offers some sunshine with a high of 48°F, followed by a 30% rain chance Tuesday.
