Spotsylvania County, VA – A welfare check in Spotsylvania County turned into a violent arrest Monday morning after deputies reportedly found narcotics in a parked vehicle and were assaulted by one of the occupants, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 9:48 a.m. on November 2, 2025, to the 5100 block of Mudd Tavern Road after a concerned citizen reported a vehicle parked in the area for an extended period. Officials said deputies located two individuals inside and saw suspected narcotics in plain view.

According to authorities, the driver — Andre Smith, 35, of Caroline County — allegedly resisted arrest and struck two deputies in the head before being subdued. The passenger, Kierstin Miller, 34, also of Caroline County, was taken into custody without incident.

Smith was charged with possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I/II narcotic, possession of a Schedule I/II narcotic, two counts of felony assault on law enforcement, and obstruction of justice. Miller was charged with possession of a Schedule I/II narcotic, officials said.

Deputies reported no serious injuries. The sheriff’s office commended the citizen who reported the suspicious vehicle, noting that their alertness “directly resulted in the removal of dangerous drugs and a drug dealer from our community.”
