Spotsylvania County, Virginia – JCPenney will permanently close its store at Spotsylvania Towne Centre, eliminating 74 jobs and reducing retail options for area shoppers.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filing dated Feb. 19, 2026, employees were notified late last week that the store is expected to shut down around May 19. The notice was submitted to the Virginia Employment Commission and local workforce officials.

The closure affects approximately 74 associates across management, operations, sales and support positions. Roles listed include assistant managers, operations supervisors, customer experience specialists, salon employees and housekeepers.

The company stated the shutdown is expected to be permanent. Employees will remain on payroll through mid-May, consistent with the 60-day federal WARN Act requirement. The law requires certain employers to provide advance notice of mass layoffs or plant closings.

JCPenney indicated there are no bumping rights tied to the layoffs but said affected workers may apply for openings at other company locations. Additional information about pay and benefits was to be provided directly to employees.

The store has operated for years at Spotsylvania Towne Centre, one of the county’s primary retail hubs. The closure marks another shift in brick-and-mortar retail, potentially impacting foot traffic at the mall and nearby businesses.

Students, part-time workers and young retail employees in the county may be among those affected.
