Spotsylvania, VA – A Spotsylvania man has been arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run that occurred last weekend on Patriot Highway, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

Major Delbert Myrick said investigators arrested Erick Cervantes Vallejo, 23, of Spotsylvania, on October 16, 2025, following a weeklong investigation into the October 11 crash that claimed the life of 61-year-old James Bijsesse. The incident happened around 11:55 p.m. in the 10200 block of Patriot Highway, where deputies responded to reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

According to the sheriff’s office, Vallejo has been charged under §18.2-894 (Felony Hit & Run) for failing to stop at the scene of an accident involving injury or death. Additional charges may follow after consultation with the Spotsylvania County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

Deputies said Bijsesse, who had no fixed address, was pronounced dead at the scene before emergency responders arrived. The sheriff’s office extended condolences to his family and thanked residents whose tips led to the arrest.

Sheriff Roger L. Harris reminded the public that “even the smallest details can play a critical role in solving cases like this.”

Anyone with additional information or video footage is asked to contact the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office at 540-582-7115 or submit tips online at www.spotsylvaniacrimesolvers.org.
