Spokane, WA – Residents across the Inland Northwest may see thunderstorms this afternoon, with forecasters warning of gusty winds, lightning, and small hail.

According to the National Weather Service Spokane, there is a 10–30% chance of thunderstorms developing behind a band of steady rain on Sunday, September 14. Storm activity is most likely between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., with the strongest cells capable of producing pea-sized hail and outflow winds up to 30 miles per hour.

The thunderstorm risk is spread across much of Eastern Washington and North Idaho, with probabilities ranging from 10% near Yakima and Ellensburg to nearly 40% around Grangeville, Idaho. Spokane has about a 16% chance of storms, while Pullman, Colville, and Sandpoint face similar odds between 14–18%.

Forecasters caution that even isolated lightning strikes can spark grass fires in dry areas, and gusty winds may briefly reduce visibility for drivers. Outdoor plans, particularly in rural or elevated areas, should include backup shelter options.

The weather service emphasizes that not all areas will experience storms, but those under passing cells should prepare for sudden wind gusts, lightning, and brief heavy rain.
